Ian Miller absolutely defined the early Warhammer and 40k worlds, along with John Blanche. He did lots of LOTR art too.

I remember this as a double page in WD, don't even know who it's by.
The heroes are Magnus the Bright, Sven Hammerhelm, Torallion Leafstar and Heinrich Lowen.

If you translate the runes etched into his sword using the Dark Tongue guide from RoC you get a little poem.
Mary had a little lamb
and so I cut its f***ing throat
It seems a regular thing that artwork was used subversively in GW publications.
Isn't it time for squats to return yet?

My understanding is that the first Drizzt book was published in 1988 while the Drow had their first rules as a playable character race in 1985 (unearthed arcana)

You managed to capture the character of space dwarfs perfectly! I always felt that while the writers invoked vivid stories, the early art really brought it alive.
